National Vocational Qualifications

Work-Based Qualifications Recognised by Employers

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are practical, work-related qualifications designed to prove your skills in a real job role. They are assessed entirely in the workplace and are available in a wide range of sectors, from construction and hospitality to health and business.

You’ll usually complete an NVQ while working or on a placement, with your progress measured by how you carry out everyday tasks. If you prefer learning by doing and want your abilities recognised with a nationally valued qualification, an NVQ could be the right path for you.

Is This Path for Me?

NVQs are well suited to students who:

  • Want to gain a qualification while working or training on the job
  • Prefer assessment through observation and practical tasks rather than exams
  • Are motivated to develop their career in a specific industry
  • Value qualifications that employers immediately recognise

Top Tip

NVQs are often taken by people already in work, but they can also be completed through work placements or apprenticeships. This makes them flexible for different stages of your career journey.

Doing my NVQ while working gave me the confidence to progress in my career — and the qualification proved my skills.

What You’ll Learn

What you learn in an NVQ depends on the sector and job role you choose. Each NVQ is made up of units that reflect the real tasks and responsibilities of the workplace. You’ll cover core skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving, as well as technical skills that are directly relevant to your job.

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment is based on practical performance, so you’ll be judged on how well you carry out your job in real situations.

Workplace observation

An assessor will observe you completing tasks at work to check your skills meet industry standards.

Portfolio of evidence

You’ll build a portfolio that shows your learning and achievements, including case studies, reports or examples of your work.

Professional discussions

You may also take part in structured discussions with your assessor to explain your approach to tasks and demonstrate your knowledge.

Entry Requirements

To start an NVQ, you’ll usually need:

  • To be employed in a relevant role, or on a structured work placement
  • A willingness to be assessed in real workplace settings
  • For some higher-level NVQs, evidence of experience or previous qualifications in your sector
Top Tip

Because NVQs are linked to work, your employer will often support you with time and resources to complete your qualification.

What Makes NVQs Different?

NVQs stand out because they are assessed entirely in the workplace, making them directly relevant to your career.

Practical focus

You gain a qualification by doing real tasks, not by sitting in exams.

Flexible structure

NVQs can be taken at your own pace, allowing you to fit study around your work and personal commitments.

Employer recognition

Because they reflect real workplace standards, NVQs are highly valued by employers in many industries.

Progression pathways

You can take NVQs at different levels, from entry-level qualifications right through to advanced professional recognition.

What Comes Next?

NVQs are designed to support career progression and lifelong learning. After completing an NVQ, you could:

  • Move on to a higher-level NVQ in your field
  • Progress into a supervisory or management role at work
  • Use your qualification to support entry into an apprenticeship or further training
  • In some cases, apply to higher education or professional qualifications

Whichever route you choose, your NVQ demonstrates that you have proven skills employers can trust.

Support Along the Way

NVQs combine workplace experience with structured support, so you’ll always have guidance while building your skills.

Workplace support

Your employer and colleagues play a key role in supporting your NVQ. They provide opportunities for you to demonstrate your skills and help you balance assessment with everyday work.

Dedicated assessor

You’ll be assigned an assessor who visits you in the workplace. They’ll guide you through the qualification, observe your progress, and give constructive feedback to help you achieve.

Learning resources

Depending on your sector, you may have access to online platforms, training sessions, or specialist equipment to support your development and evidence gathering.

Wellbeing and progression advice

Alongside workplace and assessor support, training providers often offer pastoral care and careers guidance. This ensures you have the confidence, wellbeing and direction needed to complete your NVQ successfully.
