Cambridge Nationals

Practical Skills for Future Careers

Cambridge Nationals are hands-on qualifications designed for students who enjoy practical learning alongside theory. They focus on developing real-world skills in specific subject areas, from IT and sport science to health and business. Recognised by employers and further education providers, they’re an excellent choice if you prefer coursework, projects, and applied learning over purely exam-based study.

Cambridge Nationals provide the opportunity, pre-16 and post-16, to focus on applied subjects like IT, health and social care, sport science, business, and creative media. If you enjoy practical projects and want to build career-focused skills while still achieving a recognised qualification, Cambridge Nationals could be the right path for you.

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment is a mix of coursework and external exams, giving you the chance to show what you’ve learned in different ways. This combination helps you develop both practical skills and subject knowledge.

Coursework

Much of your grade comes from coursework and projects. These are based on real-world tasks and allow you to apply your learning in practical ways.

Exams

You’ll complete at least one external exam to test your knowledge and understanding of the subject. This ensures your qualification is nationally recognised.

Practical Assessments

In some subjects you’ll complete practical assignments, such as creating media products, demonstrating sports skills, or carrying out IT tasks. These help you prove your abilities in action.

Entry Requirements

Most schools and colleges will expect you to have:

  • A strong interest in practical and applied learning
  • Good attendance and commitment to coursework deadlines
  • A willingness to take on both written and practical assignments
Top Tip

Cambridge Nationals are usually chosen as part of your Year 9 options process. Talk to your teachers about which subjects play to your strengths and will help you progress to post-16 courses.
