Supported Internships
Supported Internships are structured study programmes designed for young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). They combine time in the workplace with personalised support, helping you build the skills and confidence to move into paid employment.
You’ll usually spend most of your week in a real workplace, supported by a job coach, while also continuing with English, maths and employability skills where needed. If you want to gain independence and prepare for work in a supportive environment, a Supported Internship could be the right choice for you.
Is This Path for Me?
Supported Internships are well suited to students who:
- Have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- Want to move into employment but need extra support
- Would like to learn in a real workplace with the help of a job coach
- Are ready to build confidence, independence and practical skills
Supported Internships are tailored to your needs, so they’re a great way to prepare for employment while receiving the right level of support to succeed.

What You’ll Learn
Supported Internships focus on developing the practical skills you need for the workplace. You’ll spend most of your time on the job, supported by a coach, and also continue with English, maths and employability training if required. You’ll learn how to adapt to work routines, carry out tasks independently, and develop the social and communication skills that employers value.
How You’ll Be Assessed
There are no formal exams. Assessment is based on your progress in the workplace and the skills you develop during the programme.
Workplace performance
Your employer and job coach will assess how you adapt to the workplace, carry out tasks and build independence.
Progress reviews
You’ll have regular reviews to track your achievements, set goals and ensure your internship is supporting your long-term plans.
Personal learning goals
Assessment is tailored to you, focusing on the personal and professional skills you want to develop.
Entry Requirements
To start a Supported Internship, you’ll usually need:
- To be aged 16–24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- To be committed to a structured programme focused on moving into work
- To be ready to take on a real workplace placement with support
You don’t need prior qualifications to start a Supported Internship — what matters most is your readiness to learn and develop skills for employment.
