What is life like at The UCL Academy Sixth Form?

Life at UCL Academy Sixth Form is both stimulating and supportive, with a strong emphasis on academic achievement, independence and personal growth. Students study three or four A Levels and are encouraged to deepen their learning through independent research projects, supported by UCL staff and graduates. These projects mirror the rigour of university study and help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Beyond lessons, the sixth form offers a rich and varied programme to prepare students for their next steps. The school’s unique destinations programme ensures 97% of students progress successfully to university.

Enrichment is also a key part of sixth form life. Students can take part in programmes such as The Brilliant Club and The Critchley Scholars, alongside summer schools and placements with top universities and employers. Open events, taster sessions and induction days further ensure that every student feels fully supported.

The school fosters a collaborative community where students balance academic work with personal development opportunities. With high-quality teaching, close mentoring and strong links to one of the UK’s leading universities, life at UCL Academy Sixth Form is designed to be challenging yet rewarding. Students leave not only with excellent qualifications but also with the confidence and skills to succeed in higher education and beyond.

What extra activities and clubs can students do?

As part of FLIP Fridays students engage in a range of self led Academic Societies including BEAMers, Literary Society, Medics Society, Sustainability Society, Law Society and Arts Society for example. As this program is student led, staff are responsive to the requests of students facilitating a wide range of trips and visits associated with their societies including engagement with UCL Societies of a similar nature. Additionally students are expected to attend a year long lecture series led by staff from UCL as well as staff from the school on a wide range of topics aimed at future proofing the students critical thinking. Students are also able to use the Fitness Suit 3 lunchtimes a week as well as a wide range of sporting activities facilitated by the PE Faculty. With a focus on careers students are encouraged to engage with a wide range of activities outside school throughout the year including extensive work experience opportunities.

How are students supported and included?

Supporting emotional wellbeing and mental health of young people is part of our unique service of on-site psychotherapy, counselling, art therapy and Child and Adolescent mental health services. Our in-school pastoral support prioritises mental health. Knowing our students is at the heart of all academy practices. Our SEND and Inclusion teams support students through strong relationships with external agencies and families and enable strategies of success for all.

We work hard to ensure our curriculum offer, the topics taught and the staff body directly reflect the local community. We place inclusive practice at the heart of what we do: our approach to managing behaviour, reporting academic achievement, training staff and designing lessons are inclusive and respond to the needs of all. We make reasonable adjustments and treat everyone as an individual.

The Pastoral and PHSCE Curriculums encourage students to reflect on themselves, others and those who are different to them.

Dedicated time is built into students’ timetables for research, planning and guidance around UCAS, Oxbridge applications and degree-level apprenticeships. To support this process, many of our students successfully apply for programmes such as The Sutton Trust Summer Schools, as well as a wide range of university-based programmes. Specialist support is provided for admissions tests such as UCAT, and students are guided through mock interviews and preparation workshops.
