What is life like at Haverstock School Sixth Form?
Mainstream School
Life at Haverstock is dynamic, inclusive and supportive, built around the belief that every student can succeed. Students are welcomed into a diverse community where individuality is valued, ambitions are encouraged and high expectations are set for all.
The atmosphere in our sixth form combines academic challenge with strong pastoral care. Students benefit from a broad choice of A Levels, BTECs and T Levels, supported by specialist teachers who know their subjects inside out. The timetable is designed with flexibility in mind – there are no sixth form lessons on Wednesdays, and an early finish to Fridays – giving students space for part-time work, volunteering, or independent study.
Beyond the classroom, life at Haverstock is enriched by a wide variety of opportunities. Students take part in work experience placements, internships and partnerships with leading universities and employers. Many progress to Russell Group universities or competitive apprenticeships, supported by tailored careers advice and one-to-one mentoring.
Wellbeing is central to life here. Staff put time and effort into ensuring students feel supported and valued, with strong pastoral teams and regular assemblies fostering a sense of belonging. Alongside academic study, students enjoy a wide range of co-curricular activities in sports, music, arts and debating, which nurture confidence and leadership.
Haverstock Sixth Form offers not just an education, but a community where students are inspired to achieve, supported to grow and prepared for the next stage of their lives.
L1 Provision
Life at L1 Haverstock Sixth Form is centred on support, inclusion and practical opportunity. The provision is designed for students who may need additional help alongside their studies, ensuring that no one is left behind. With small cohorts, the atmosphere is personal and nurturing, allowing staff to focus on individual progress and wellbeing.
A typical week combines vocational learning with strong pastoral support. Students work towards qualifications such as BTEC Diplomas in Construction or Business, alongside opportunities to retake core GCSEs. The emphasis on work based learning is clear, with placements that provide real world experience, supported by employability training and mentoring. This prepares learners with practical skills and a professional outlook, opening pathways to apprenticeships and future employment.
Vocational Learning
These units have been carefully selected as they are attainable and maximise programme engagement. The vocational learning provides the young people with the practical skills and knowledge to best prepare them for a professional career in their chosen fields.
Work based learning
At the forefront of work-based learning are the work placements. These work placements are a key component of the programme as it prepares and offers opportunities for students to progress into employment and apprenticeships following this course. These sessions are then complemented with onsite skill building sessions.
There are networking opportunities for the young people throughout the academic year to grow their professional contact list.

How are students supported and included?
Mainstream Provision
At Haverstock School, student support and inclusion are central to the ethos of Aim High, Step Forward, Be Kind. We ensure that every student is welcomed, valued and given the opportunity to thrive, both academically and personally.
Our sixth form has a pathway for students with no qualifications or with all Grade 9 GCSEs. Every year, we have some students leaving us going into Level 2 apprenticeships and others going on to study Medicine at Oxbridge.
We give students who do not achieve a GCSE grade 4 in either English or Maths a chance to try again on our Level 2 pathway as fully included members of the sixth form. We also have a Level 1 provision specifically designed for students with an EHCP, a range of additional needs, and/or previous school exclusion. Level 1 has a designated Pastoral Manager and the SENDCO works closely with the sixth form team.
Year 12s have a non-teaching Head of Year who is responsible for all aspects of their attendance, ethos and wellbeing; we are in regular contact with home to both praise and challenge students. Year 12s also have a tutor and weekly assemblies, as well as learning PSHCE. We have a strong emphasis on mental health and wellbeing, with an on-site school psychologist being a key part of our safeguarding and wellbeing team.
All our sixth formers have access to a professional mentor, masterclasses, work experience and/or paid internships. UCAS applications are sent off with the Head of Sixth Form’s support during a 1-hour meeting per student. Our corporate partners in the sixth form include: CMS Law Firm, Convex Insurance, Deloitte, Google and Camden Labs.
L1 Provision
L1 Haverstock Sixth Form is an inclusive provision. Our small cohorts enable us to offer a nurturing environment for students who alongside their study may need additional support, and our personal development and mentoring offer is instrumental in meeting the behaviour and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs of our cohort.
We have a dedicated space for teaching, learning and reflection when students are onsite. This space is managed by the pastoral lead. This zone is a safe space for students to express and control negative emotions in a dignified manner. Referral time is a structured time of reflection in which they engage in a ‘cycle of repair’.
Our dedicated team implement Emotionally Based School Avoidance-prevention techniques and trauma-informed practices and oversee the wellbeing and progress of our students. All staff including teachers have access to regular CPD to improve their teaching of students with special educational needs.
